Chakras are the Energy Centres of the Human Body
Although various schools of Yoga exist, it is sensible to begin with
Hatha Yoga (s. Appendix) because it concentrates on breathing which
works on the autonomous nervous system. This means that even
without being aware of the true purpose, practitioners will derive some
benefit for her or his health if the asanas are done with attention and
the correct breathing.
Whereas many Germans regard Yoga as a glamorous or fashionable
form of gymnastics, it is interesting that a recent television programm
on ARD alpha in the section „Planet Wissen“ informed about various
scientific studies having been done since the 1960s. Apparently 5-6 %
of Germans pracise Yoga and since 2003 some German
Krankenkassen pay for it as a preventive method. Although chakras
are not mentioned in this programm, various studies about different
effects of Yoga on the body are explained by the scientist Holger
Cramer, neuro-psychologist Rick Hanson of Freiburg and Dr. Ott from
Giessen University.
Rita Keller, Iyengar Yoga Teacher (Director of the Iyengar-Yoga-
Instituts Rhein-Ahr e.V. in Bad Neuenahr and Köln) shows and explains
the effects of practising the asanas with attention and the correct
breathing, as taught by the well known teacher from Pone in India.
In this sense, the detailed information about each chakra on this
website can be of help to those who already practise Yoga but also
want to explore the deeper sense and its true aim. Personal study of
this „theoretical“ knowledge can help us raise our consciousness to a
higher level than the normal, everyday ‘unawareness’. Alongside it,
some practical exploration of the chakra colours in visualisation or
actual painting in a playful manner, can enhance our imagination and
be a deeply enjoyable experience. Not limiting the power of our
imagination while painting or visualising, can also be of great value
when practising Chakra Healing Meditations.
You will find some of my colour explorations here and there on this
website, either in form of an ovum or like the „ladder reaching up to
heaven“ below. It is one of many possibilities of expressing the energy
of the lower chakras being raised to mingle with the higher ones.
